1 〔資格がないこと･適任でないこと〕 disqualification; 【法】 incapacity; disqualification.

●自分の子供を愛せないなんて母親失格だと思う. I don't think anyone who doesn't love her own child deserves the name of mother. | Nobody who is unable to love her own child deserves to be a mother.

・こんな授業では子供たちに先生失格と言われてもしかたない. Giving classes like this I shouldn't be surprised if the children say I'm not fit to be a teacher [a failure as a teacher].

・捜査状況を部外者に漏らすなんて刑事として失格だ. The sort of person who leaks the details of a case shouldn't be allowed to practice as a detective.

・麻薬をやるなんて人間として失格だよ. Taking drugs is rock bottom. | No decent human being takes drugs. | People who take drugs don't belong to the human race.

2 〔競技などの資格を失うこと〕 being [getting] disqualified 《from…》; 〔自分の行為が原因で〕 disqualifying oneself.

・ミスワールド･コンテストで彼女は既婚者とわかり失格となった. She was disbarred [excluded] from the Miss World contest when it was discovered that she was already married.
